Top tips from Jessica
Save on air conditioning and keep comfortable by setting your thermostat between 20C – 25.5C.
Enjoy the view; use natural lighting during the day time so you don’t need to use your lights.
Consider a shower instead of bath to save water.
Read your favourite newspaper online rather than on newsprint.
Avoid disposables and reuse, reuse, reuse. Whether it’s a supermarket bag, a razor, batteries or ink cartridges, go for options that allow you to reuse.
Check out what you’re buying and opt for options that are biodegradable or at the very least able to be recycled.
Simplify your life as much as possible and keep only the belongings you use/enjoy regularly.
Make use of your friends. If you only need something temporarily, borrow it from a friend.
Buy used…check out Ebay, local thrift stores, Amazon or even garage sales, you’d be surprised at what you can find and it’ll be much easier on your pocket.
Avoid creating rubbish. If you’re only buying a few pieces while shopping, skip the plastic bag and when ordering take-out only grab the number of napkins and straws you’ll use.
Mug-on-the-go. Most coffee shops have great reusable mugs. Buy one so you don’t need a paper cup each time you grab a coffee.
Support your farmer’s market and choose local food. Each pound of local food prevents a quarter pound of CO2 emissions.
Check out endangered seafood lists and avoid seafood on the list. Also purchase seafood caught ethically. As an example, only buy ‘dolphin safe’ seafood.
Fair trade. Choose coffee and chocolate that is fair trade certified.
Free range. Stay away from meat and eggs where animals have been forced into cages and select free range alternatives.
Unplug. Keep kitchen appliances unplugged to conserve energy. Seriously this works!
Insulate your hot water tank and hot water pipes so it’s harder for heat to escape.
Check your head. Just changing your shower head can reduce the amount of hot water you use significantly so replace yours with a lower flow alternative.
Love your native plants. This will cut down on watering requirements and if you do need to water plants, do it at night to avoid evaporation.
When it comes to your body, go natural, non-toxic and cruelty free – win-win!
